Hopefully you are starting to realize why variation is so important to your exercise program. Working with a personal trainer can be so valuable because they provide this much-needed variation. Remember when I talked earlier about how we tend to do only one form of exercise, the one we enjoy the most and are genetically predisposed to do? Personal trainers often force you to step outside your comfort zone, putting you through workout routines that you wouldn’t choose to do on your own.

You are paying them for variation.

They also hopefully possess knowledge about how to safely and effectively vary your routine. It matters not how different the workout is from what you would normally do. If they put you through that same workout over and over, your results will diminish over time.

You don’t need to pay a personal trainer to add variation to your routine. All you need to really shake up your routine is to learn another acronym—yes, one more—whose components I have referenced a few times already: FITT.
